| This heat resistant stainless alloy, containing 12 per cent chromium has sufficient aluminum added to facilitate fabrication. The aluminum addition maximizes toughness and loss of corrosion resistance in weld areas .....an important feature for such applications as large oil refinery cracking towers where annealing after welding is not possible.
Corrosion Resistance: Good resistance to the atmosphere, fresh water, foods, alkalies and mild acids when in the hardened, tempered and passivated condition.
Heat Resistance: Not recommended for use above 700 degrees F.
Heat Treatment: Annealing-heat to 1550-1650 degrees F and slow cool. Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 1350-1450 degrees F and air cool. Hardening - Heat to 1850-1950 degrees F, cool in oil and temper at 300-700 degrees F to suit mechanical requirements. See accompanying table and graph. Note: Tempering above 700 degrees F is to be avoided.
Welding:
If welding is necessary... pre-heat at 500 degrees F and follow with a full anneal. Type 420, 309 and 310 filler rods can be used following this pre-heat and post-annealing procedure.
